Robot Building!

Robotics is the science of perceiving and manipulating the physical world through computer-controlled devices. Examples of successful robotic systems include mobile platforms for planetary exploration, industrial robotics arms in assembly lines, cars that travel by themselves, and manipulators that assist surgeons.

Robot building is the main focus of this website, but, generally, every aspect of building autonomous mobile robots will be posted to the site. Every robot that anyone builds involves at least three major skill sets.

You will need mechanical skills for fabricating the drive train and building a platform for mounting sensors and other components to the robot.

Once the platform is created, electronic skills come into play in connecting power, building electronic circuits, soldering, and connecting various sensors in a way that they can communicate with the micro controller.

When micro controllers are involved, you will need to know how to program them to make your robot do what you want it to.

All this, and more, is what this site is about. The robotics projects at Latham Robotics will hopefully serve to further the robotic technologies in today's world emphasizing autonomous mobile robots and artificial intelligence.

Riverside Robotics Society Expo 2009

The Riverside Robotics Society's first Robotics Expo was a huge success. There were well over 25 booths setup with all sorts of robots for the community to marvel at. The event drew over 300 visitors to the Expo. Demonstrations of artificial intelligence, robot automation, robot sumo wrestling competitions, and even a life-size Lost-in-Space B9 Robot was on display. Latham Robotics was proud to participate in the event and we look forward to the Expo next year. We hope to see even more exciting demonstrations next year as our local robotics enthusiasts increase their reportoir of amazing autonomous robots.
